Bucklin Family - 150 year old vines

Bucklin_oldvine_1I'd like to point everyone to Will Bucklin's vintage blog in the wine forum at eGullet.org.  The Bucklin family's Old Hill Ranch vineyard in Sonoma is about 150 years old, arguably the oldest vineyard in California.  Will's photo and story blog will take us step by step through an entire vintage at Old Hill Ranch--winter pruning, spring soil management, summer canopy management, and fruit set, culminating in photo essays of autumn's grape harvest and "crush."  Most of the fruit is sold to Ravenswood, but Will also produces limited edition releases under his own family name.  The winery is not open to the public, so this is a rare peek into a very special production.  Here is an excerpt from his opening post:

My name is Will and I have been making wine, or at least learning how to make wine, since 1983. My first job was as an intern was at Kenwood winery, I was very green and they called me “Won’t.” My second internship was at Chateau Lafite Rothschild; there they called me Regan.

Then I was off to Australia, Mendocino, the Russian River and finally Oregon, where I was winemaker at King Estate for eight years. Slowly, the inexorable force of family ties pulled me back home to our ranch near Glen Ellen. After 20 years working in wineries, pulling hoses, wearing rubber boots and wearing the enamel off my teeth tasting wine (I know, I know, cry me a river!) I am now driving tractors and pruning grapevines and I truly love it.  Today I am off to the winery, it is too wet to do much in the vineyard. More to come.
