Dover Canyon Winery

  • Welcome to Dover Canyon Winery. We gave up successful wine careers at larger wineries to work in our own small vineyard and produce limited editions of vineyard-designate wines with a focus on particular Paso Robles microclimates. The property we purchased was a walnut orchard, so I guess we could say, "Welcome to Dover Canyon Winery, the nut farm."

Wine Reviews

  • FoodTV host Chris Cognac
"I am a wine freak. I love a good Zinfandel, and there is a small vintner named Dover Canyon that makes some of the best wine on the planet . . ."
  • San Francisco Chronicle
"These wines could convert Zinfandel naysayers by demonstrating that high alcohol and fruit can be present but not overshadow the wines' other charms. . . Most dishes on the table will benefit from its seamless style and red cherry acidity."
  • Vinography
"This is an individualistic wine with something to say, and most will find the conversation very pleasing. I'd be particularly interested in seeing how this wine ages. "
  • Wine Camp
"Wines like this transcend personal preferences. They are so distinctive and so well made that if you have any passion for wine at all you can’t help but to love them."

Spring Releases ~ 2004 Cujo Zinfandel and 2004 Old Vine Zin

2004_old_vine_zin The long-awaited March 2006 releases of pagan zinfandels and barbarian syrahs are now available!

In addition to the Benito Dusi Old Vine Zinfandel, we have just released our popular 2004 "Cujo" Zinfandel, the immense and smoky 2004 Syrah, Starr Ranch and a 2004 Zinfandel Reserve which contains our first estate zinfandel harvest. Production of the Zinfandel Reserve is only 75 cases.

Last year, the 2003 Old Vine Zinfandel was selected as the #1 Wine of the Year in Los Angeles, and the wine was poured for Mario Batali, Alton Brown, and Kevin Brauch on the FoodTV set of Iron Chef America.  (Thanks again to Chris Cognac for that very cool hook-up!)

On the Wine Spectator Forums, we found this anonymous review of the 2002 Old Vine Zinfandel, Benito Dusi Vineyard:

"Picked this up in a wine shop I was pouring at tonight in SLO. $25, listed 14.7% abv. Sadly, only 8 barrels (~200 cases) were produced. First pour: nose of brett, sweat, and funk. 5 mins later after pouring first glass:
Smack my a** and talk dirty to me! Reddish purple in color. Sexy, spicy nose displaying an interesting combination of bubble gum and minty toothpaste mixed with briary red fruit and a touch of barnyardy brett. Medium bodied, fleshy, gripping palate showcasing more briar berry, a solid nerve of acidity and no trace of hyper-ripe fruit, jammy-ness or heat. Call her slutty with a touch of class as she digs her nails across my tongue on the way down the hatch while dropping pinches of spice before begging for an encore.
Now that's my type of Zin!" From Wine Spectator Forums

A list of current releases and an order form are available on our website. We look forward to hearing from you!
