Dover Canyon Winery

  • Welcome to Dover Canyon Winery. We gave up successful wine careers at larger wineries to work in our own small vineyard and produce limited editions of vineyard-designate wines with a focus on particular Paso Robles microclimates. The property we purchased was a walnut orchard, so I guess we could say, "Welcome to Dover Canyon Winery, the nut farm."

Wine Reviews

  • FoodTV host Chris Cognac
"I am a wine freak. I love a good Zinfandel, and there is a small vintner named Dover Canyon that makes some of the best wine on the planet . . ."
  • San Francisco Chronicle
"These wines could convert Zinfandel naysayers by demonstrating that high alcohol and fruit can be present but not overshadow the wines' other charms. . . Most dishes on the table will benefit from its seamless style and red cherry acidity."
  • Vinography
"This is an individualistic wine with something to say, and most will find the conversation very pleasing. I'd be particularly interested in seeing how this wine ages. "
  • Wine Camp
"Wines like this transcend personal preferences. They are so distinctive and so well made that if you have any passion for wine at all you can’t help but to love them."

Summer Sips Survey

Earlier this summer we decided we’d like to get to know our customers better, and we included a fun survey in our last e-news blast. If you would like to be added to our winery email list, or if you’d like to propose a topic for our next survey, let us know by posting a comment here or emailing us at dovercanyon@tcsn.net.

Here are the results of our summer survey:

Which statement most closely describes your vehicle?

Nearly half our respondents drive SUV’s, 34% drive sedans or wagons, and 12% own a fast, racy, chick magnet. Less than 8% drive a high mileage scooter.

Which wines do you most frequently drink in the summer?

Not surprisingly, zinfandel, zinfandel and zinfandel was the clear winner at 42%. Since we are a zin producer I assume most people on our email list are zin lovers, so I guess that number is a little skewed. Sauvignon blanc and pinot grigio were a close second place at 38%, and roussanne and viognier were also popular with 24% votes. Respondents could choose more than one category, so there will be some overlap.

Spicy or fruity reds like grenache, barbera, tempranillo came in at 23%, and syrah got 21% of the votes. Less than 2% of our respondents drink "expensive or well-aged Burgundy or Bordeaux." I forgot to ask, however, if anyone prefers "affordable, California or Oregon pinot noir."

Which of these statements describe your household?

Many of our respondents, 38% in fact, admit that "every day is a mad scramble and there's stuff everywhere," but another 33% claim to be tidy and well-organized. Hmmm. What I found interesting is that less than 8% have a "2 1/2 kids in the suburbs" lifestyle, while 17% are single.

Do you have any pets?

Nearly 60% of our respondents have a dog, and 55% have cats. Three percent have birds, iguanas or snakes, 8% own horses, and there’s a mysterious 20% "other."

Do you participate in a sport or physcial activity in your spare time?

Golf is the most popular choice of activity at 34%, gym activities 18%, and swimming 13%. Martial arts and yoga are more popular than kayaking, tennis, team sports and surfing, but all the categories had responses ranging from 3% to 12%. Clearly our email list leads an active lifestyle.

What's your cooking / dining style?

Over 60% of our email list loves to entertain frequently and have friends over for dinner, and a whopping 40% say they grill every night. Five to ten percent enjoy eating out frequently.

Who does the cooking and shopping in your family?

Responses here were evenly divided between the lady of house, man of the house, and couples shopping together.

What are your favorite FoodTV shows

This would be an interesting dinner discussion, as FoodTV personalities Rachael Ray, Alton Brown, Mario Batali, Bobby Flay and Emeril Lagasse each got 20% to 28% of the votes. (Respondents could vote for more than one, however.) However, 21% said they don’t watch FoodTV, preferring sports, news, and movies.

If you were going to be on Who Wants to Be Winemaker (filming this fall in Paso Robles), which grape variety would you produce?

Zinfandel was again the clear winner with 41% of the votes. Syrah came in second, with 27%, pinot noir 16%, cabernet 8%, tempranillo 6%, and roussanne 2%. I think it’s interesting that faced with a huge challenge like this our readership would still eschew the Napa and media darling, cabernet, for a less well-known and trickier varietal like zinfandel. Now that’s loyalty to a grape. Even tempranillo got as much love as cabernet.

Who has the best palate in your family?

Me, of course 50%; My wife or girlfriend 10%; We both do, but sometimes we like different things 40%.

This was a trolling question, as it presumes that all respondents are male. However, nearly half our wine club memberships are couples, and over 20% are single memberships in a woman’s name. I knew that before posting this question, but I had an impish impulse to see if anyone would call it out. Oh boy, did I hear from a few people on this! Thank you to everyone who responded, and spoke up about women and wine. I confess that I was indeed hoping to hear from a few outspoken ladies, and I hope I can encourage some of you who emailed me to share your views on the Women Wine Critics Board blog.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey. I’ve learned some very fun and concrete facts about our fans and customers. Looks like I should keep those golf discounts coming!
