Dover Canyon Winery

  • Welcome to Dover Canyon Winery. We gave up successful wine careers at larger wineries to work in our own small vineyard and produce limited editions of vineyard-designate wines with a focus on particular Paso Robles microclimates. The property we purchased was a walnut orchard, so I guess we could say, "Welcome to Dover Canyon Winery, the nut farm."

Wine Reviews

  • FoodTV host Chris Cognac
"I am a wine freak. I love a good Zinfandel, and there is a small vintner named Dover Canyon that makes some of the best wine on the planet . . ."
  • San Francisco Chronicle
"These wines could convert Zinfandel naysayers by demonstrating that high alcohol and fruit can be present but not overshadow the wines' other charms. . . Most dishes on the table will benefit from its seamless style and red cherry acidity."
  • Vinography
"This is an individualistic wine with something to say, and most will find the conversation very pleasing. I'd be particularly interested in seeing how this wine ages. "
  • Wine Camp
"Wines like this transcend personal preferences. They are so distinctive and so well made that if you have any passion for wine at all you can’t help but to love them."

Inside a Wine Scam: Money Orders

Diane Raubach at Security State Bank in Chehalis, Washington agreeably answered some questions for us about the safety of accepting money orders for internet sales.

Question: Can Money Orders be cancelled even after the bank has made the funds available? Is there a time limit in which a Money Order can be cancelled? Or can it happen at any time?

Answer: Money Orders can come back for fraud, forged, altered, counterfeit, etc. They can also be returned stop payment. There is not a time limit, but usually these items are processed within a couple of months.

Question: If someone receives a money order, is there any way to track it? Is there some way to find out where it was issued, etc?

Answer: Yes the issuing bank or company would need to be contacted. I think this step would be labor intensive.

Question: Once the money is wired, is there any way to get that money back? Is there any way to identify the account it went into? Is there any way to find out who owns that account?

Answer: I think the only way to get the information would be to subpoena it; looks to me like they would have to sue the company.

Question: Do banks work with law enforcement on these issues? Or do banks resent the intrusion? And why?

Answer: Banks work with law enforcement to help solve the crime, especially if the bank is somehow involved or impacted. Every bank is different regarding the resources they may use on this. Banks are also bound by privacy laws, so we cannot share information with anyone without a customer’s consent or a subpoena from law enforcement.

Question: If someone feels themselves caught in a scam like this and they are stuck halfway in the door, having accepted money and wired some money on before realizing it’s a scam, is there anything they can do?

Answer: Anytime someone is caught or involved in a scam they should notify law enforcement as soon as they realize what has occurred.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Good luck with your investigations and thank you for taking the time to share these experiences with others so that they can be spared from a similar fate.

We read your blog on money orders, and we have heard of this problem with eBAY users for a number of years. Many people on eBAY have cashed money orders, and then the banks have come back and charged the accounts. There may be great help for you on one of the morning radio programs.

We listen to Clark Howard whenever we are in the car, and we find him on the am band. He plays here from 9-12 in the mornings. You can also talk to him on clarkhoward.com. He has talked about the problems with money orders for a couple of years. He is a self made millionaire, and very down to earth with all of his financial advice. We started getting our free credit reports, because of him. We order a free one every four months. You can only have one a year from each of the three companies, but he suggested that you spread them out. We have never had a credit problem, but with mail being stolen in our neighborhood the last three years, we wanted to make sure we were okay. We now have a large locking security mailbox that Jim set in concrete and steel posts. At least if it disappears one day, we will at least know the mail has been stolen. Meth addicts hit our neighborhood because we are so close to the freeway and Portland. They go through the mail and always leave a couple of items; so you don't think that you have been hit.

Thank you for your blog. We both enjoy following it.
