As many of you know, we release mainly zinfandels in the spring, and Rhone-style wines in the fall. Which means it's time to Rhone up on your wines! This fall's selection includes a grenache blend, a silky syrah, and another rendition of the Barbarian, a zinfandel-petite sirah blend.
Each of these wines is a production of only 6 barrels. All three wines were barrel-aged for eighteen months and bottle-aged for six months. For evaluation purposes, we recommend decanting and leaving the wine open for 1/2 hour to an hour, or splash decanting the wine prior to serving.
To order, check out Current Releases, and splash open our Order Form.
Weather Update: We are trying to get orders out as rapidly as possible, but there will be weather holds when temperatures rise. So far, we have managed to squeak out a few dozen orders to the foggy, cooler coastal communities. The bulk of our wine shipping will leave in October, when the weather is cooler. If you have questions about your wine membership, please email us at dovercanyon@tcsn.net.
- 2006 Barbarian
60% Zinfandel / 40% Syrah. We have only made one previous vintage of a Barbarian zinfandel/petite sirah blend . . . It was such a rousing success that Dan refused to do it again until the flavors were “just right.” The 2006 vintage gave us those wonderful earthy, masculine flavors we wanted for another stunning Barbarian blend. The Barbarian is named for its succulent fruit, seductive smoke, and barbaric Hun campfire essence—roast game, smoke, wild berries, trampled straw, blood, iron, warm horseflesh, leather, impending rain, heather, and forest floor. Aged sur lies for eighteen months in neutral French oak. Unfined and unfiltered. Only 6 barrels produced.
- 2006 Syrah, Jimmy's Vineyard
Flavors of blueberry, licorice, and bacon are highlighted with nuances of roast beef, peppercorn and star anise in this single-vineyard syrah from the calcareous soils and wind-kissed evenings of Templeton Gap in Paso Robles. Jimmy’s Vineyard is located on Highway 46 West in the cool, windy Templeton Gap corridor. Owner Jim Jacobsen comes from three generations of California ranchers and farmers, and he knows his stuff. His fruit always qualifies as a premium level wine club selection. A long, cool vintage produced a wine of exceptionally rich character and unique vineyard expression. This wine was produced using small open top fermentation with Rhône-style yeast, and aged for sixteen months sur lies in new French oak. Only 6 barrels produced.
- 2006 Bone Lore
68% Grenache / 16% Syrah / 16% Petite Sirah. The 2006 ‘Bone Lore’ is a triple entendre. The name ’Bone Lore’ means the ‘story of the bone.’ It refers to three things—our series of art wine labels which feature a thirsty St. Bernard on the reds, and to the fossil-rich calcareous soils of Paso Robles, and it is also an oblique homage to the Rhone, from whose loins the mighty Rhone wines of Paso Robles have sprung. A rich expression of Paso Robles terroir, Bone Lore features deep plum, smoke, cherry-chocolate, and peppercorn flavors. This unique blend was chosen from the most terroir-driven barrels of the 2006 vintage, and from the complex Miocene era soils of the El Pomar region in Paso Robles. Aged sur lies for eighteen months in neutral French oak. Unfined and unfiltered. Only 6 barrels produced.
