Thistles

Thistles

Thistles grow abundantly around the stream and pond. Their deep roots penetrate the soil, pulling moisture down. When the plants die, their roots decompose into pure, rich humus, enriching the soil and attracting beneficial nematodes. In late summer and fall, their fluffy seedheads provide food and fluff for nesting blackbirds.
